Parenting is a great learning! Some say you cannot revisit your childhood. You can see it through your children. However, at times, parents do have concerns about the right pace of development of their child. Like the physical growth, generally, child’s development is also observed through communication as well as usage of words or pronunciations.

As Indian parents, we tend to use different pronunciations for the little ones. Thus, it is difficult to draw a clear line of parameters to gauge the development at an early age of 1yrs to 2 yrs to 18 months. This blog post will help you find out whether your child needs a speech therapy at this age.

Does your child respond to signs of communication?

The earliest sign of communication is that your child smiles or laughs to different voices. Some children turn their heads in the direction of sounds of their mothers. These behaviors are usually observed at home from infancy to 6 months of age. From the age of 4-8 months, babies start to babble and make gestures like pointing. They understand the sounds of different sound toys.

Does your child understand sounds and words?

At the age of 12-18 months, most of the kids start to say a few words like ‘Mumma’ or ‘Papa’ and make sounds like ‘Peep’ (Horn of a bike), ‘Boo’ (sound of animals as taught by parents or elders at home). By this age, if your child isn’t saying words or has a very limited pool of words, he/ she should be taken to a speech therapist.

Does anyone understand what your child speaks?

By the age of 18 months, generally, the child learns to use two or more words together. Their pronunciations are much better to be understood even by strangers. Similarly, they understand questions asked by the strangers and respond in short sentences or more than 2 words.

Does your child use sentences or remember names?

Beyond the age of 18- 20 months, children start speaking sentences or use subject, verbs, and object in their sentences. Does your child remember his/ her own name or name of pet at home? Many times, child recollects the memory of pictures or speaks common nouns. For example; child points and says dog/ cat/ cow.

Failing to combine words to make at least short sentences at the age of 18 months to 2 years is a sign you need to visit a speech therapist for your child.

Does your child struggle to make sounds or speak words?

Children by the age of 2 years make a habit of using words of their knowledge. They make sentences that convey what they are willing to say. If a child is struggling to speak easier sounds like ‘P’, ‘B’ or ‘M’, this should be brought to the notice of a speech therapist.

Diagnosing these problems earlier in the first 2 years of age is difficult at times. Visiting a speech therapist at any point of doubts is ideal. In a case of hearing difficulties that result into a struggle in speaking can be treated with the help of an audiologist. Simple observations at home can help you understand your child’s hearing and speech development before pre-school.
